Dear Friends,
I am an Irish Newfoundlander and Labradorean, who believed passionately in non-violent, lawful and legal resistance to all forms of violence and domination. My views on the root causes and the catastrophic suffering of war are totally different from those of the ruling elite in this province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
I respect that for a majority of people in Newfoundland and Labrador, the incredible suffering of the entire population of Newfoundland and Labrador during World War I. My feelings about World War I as an Irish Newfoundland and Labrador Roman Catholic are incredibly complicated.
Here, former Premier Andrew Furey shares his emotional response to the deep emotions felt here.
As a Roman Catholic I so love and admire Pope Benedict XV possibly my all time favourite Pope. I so agree that peace is our primary commitment as Christians and followers of the Prince of Peace.
I agree with everything Pope Benedict XV wrote about a peace plan and the Christmas truce.
The response to WWI in the colonies of the Western European imperialists and we are all still suffering the consequences.
